Gemma Daou

Gemma was born in Beirut and teaches Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga in Beirut and Brussels. She is currently carrying out research in philosophy on the method and practice of meditation.
After a dancing training with Rafic Garzouzi at Garzouzi Academy, Gemma discovered yoga with some friends in Lebanon in 2000. She followed her first classes at Nabil Najjar’s Sivananda Yoga Center Beirut, where she met yogini teacher Danielle Abi Saab from the New-York Jivamukti school. Danielle introduced her to Vinyasa practice.

During a stay in the South of France for her philosophy studies, Gemma was introduced to Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga by Barbara Thiry. At the Hanumani center  founded by Philippe Mons in Lille she practiced intensively under the guidance of Sri Sheshadri. In 2008, she took an interest to Iyengar yoga and attended a training at the Yoga Raum in Leipzig with Elvira Schurig. On the following year, she was organised an Ashtanga Yoga workshop at Clemenceau Yoga Center in Beirut, bringing Ashtanga to Lebanon for the first time. In 2012, the annual series of workshop was brought to a close with an exceptional workshop given by Sheshadri and his son Harish in Lebanon.

Gemma is a confirmed teacher by the ABEPY (Association Belge des Enseignants et Pratiquants du Yoga) since 2011.

She continues to deepen her practice at Sheshadri’s Pavy Shala in Mysore and following senior teachers: Manju Jois, Kristina Karitinou Ireland and Jean-Claude Garnier. After her philosophy studies influenced by philosopher and poet Jad Hatem, she still finds inspiration in her studies in Lebanon where she focused on comparative mysticism. In her research for her PhD in philosophy, she explores the method and practice of meditation in Ancient and Modern philosophy. She gives Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga classes at her personal studio in Brussels at the University of Louvain sports centre and different venues of Brussels city.
